RIP Keith “Guru” Elam: July 17, 1966 – April 20, 2010

Last night one of my favorite artists died of cancer-related causes, if you followed this blog at its best days, you know that Guru was very important to me, since his album Jazzmatazz vol.1 was one of the albums that got me into Hip-Hop, and I can honestly say that there would never be no rapdungeon without Guru, just like a lot of our favorite mc's wouldn't ever rhyme if they cheard Gang Starr first. I'm glad I had a chance to see him perform live and to have his autograph (as you can see in the picture). R.I.P. Guru, your voice and importance to Hip-Hop will never be forgotten.

Promoe (2001) Government Music

Promoe is a Swedish rapper, and member of Swedish hip hop group Looptroop Rockers. I had an album from him but never payed much attention to it, until I heard Promoe on the european allstar track DIVERSIDAD Experience that made me want to listen to a bit more from him.

Well, after listening to his albums and other tracks I must say that Promoe's flow is one of my favorites of nowadays. This is his first solo album, I hope you like it.

I have to admit that I usualy ignore most of the stuff from unkown rappers that I've never heard about, ignoring new talent is not the best thing to do but I just don't have time to listen to every new rapper that comes out or every mixtape that people email me. So it's not everyday that I discover a new MC that I like, actually, if you're new, you need to be really good to catch my atention. But this week, I've listened to someone that I really enjoyed: the kid's name is Nero and this is how he sounds:

And this mixtape features him rapping over 90's classics with the prodution handled by Mike Waxx of Illroots... oh, and did I mention that Nero is only 16? Forget about Bow Wow or Soulja Boy and all those clowns, this is the best thing I've heard from a young MC since Shyheim's debut album. It makes you see that some (rare) rappers of this this generation (my generation) still know who paved the way and want to make good music.

In case you don't know, Elzhi is a member of Detroit's Slum Village, and honestly, I don't know much about him, but I downloaded the CD based on the production and guest appearences and I was supprised on how good it is. L.A. Weekly describes it as The Best Rap Album of the Year Thus Far, so you got to give it a go. Check out "The Reason" & "Motown 25", my favs.

Guess what? It's not called Middle Passage anymore, but our friend Immortal Technique released a new album after 5 years of waiting! Holly shit!

It's an album-mixtape, mixed by DJ Green Lantern, who in the last month also released the amazing Nas - The Nigger Tape. So props to DJ Green Lantern, seriously. If you're waiting for tracks like "You Never Know" or "Harlem Streets" you're going to be disappointed, instead, Tech's new agressivity is really good, I think it's a great record.

I still have many albums to post, like 9th Wonder & Jean Grae's, Atmosphere's, Craig G & Marley Marl's (yup, that's right), Elzhi's, The Roots, Skillz, lots of great Hip-Hop has been recently released. 2 Years and running... well, kind off..

Just noticed yesterday that it's been 2 years since I started posting... damn, 2 years? A lot of thing have changed, a lot of albums have been posted. But lately... meh... things in the blog have gone straight downhill. When I look back at months like September 2006, when I made 22 posts in a month, and compare them to the last couple of months, I'm even ashamed of opening the blog. As I said before, school has been pretty ruff lately, and I rarely have spare time to listen to most of the albums that come out, so my posts are affected, and I disapoint my visitors.
But, if you think I'm going to close the shop, you're wrong. Rapdungeon is still here, and I hope to still be here a year from now. I still got 160+ Kool G. Rap tracks and 100+ Masta Ace tracks to to post on my collections somewhere in the futue (thanks to many people who have helped), I just need to have time to organise and complete them, which I don't have right now.

Meanwhile, one of the blogs that has been here from the start, from one of the first people who ever commented on rapdungeon has closed down. So go thank Biff and all his crew at their blog for all their work.

Brand new album from this french group composed by DJ DAMAGE, DJ DUSTY and MADHI. If you're like me, you'll only need look at the group name and guestlist to know this is going to be REALLY good.
Like Brand New Heavies did 16 years ago (damn, 16?), the group makes jazzy music and invites great MC's to rap over, from Fatlip (Pharcyde), to Asheru, Sadat X or Apany B. I'm really tired so I won't write more, but I recommend this one. Jazz-rap is just one of the best things to ever being created.

You know the Gang Starr days aren't comming back, not even the early Jazzmatazz days are comming back, and you also know what I think of Guru's new "Superproducer" Solar. Anyway, I'll still be checking everything that Guru drops, as wack as it gets. Even though it's not Lootpack, Wildchild still managed to find the hottest producers in the game for his second solo album. I saw this album about a year ago (?) at 9@ 's place and I was amazed by its quality, and shocked by the fact it's pratically unknown outside the UK. EVERYONE should listen to this classic, they'll remind of Public Enemy sometimes, old school fans will love this.

Hijack were a hip hop group from Brixton in London, featuring Kamanchi Sly, DJ Supreme, DJ Undercover, Ulysses, Agent Fritz and Agent Clueso. Their early singles brought them to the attention of West Coast rapper Ice T, who signed the group to his own Rhyme Syndicate Records label.

On my trip to London this weekend, I took a look at the Hip-Hop section of a HMV store and I happened to find this album... I don't have a clue if it's available at regular stores worldwide or if it's that rare (or probably pretty common), but I decided to buy it just because it's a CLASSIC. I also tried to find an album by another Old School hip-hop group called "Hijack" (props to 9@ for letting me know about him), but as usual, the employees didn't know shit about Hip-Hop, and after 5 minutes explaining how to spell the group name, I decided to give up, but expect a post about them soon.

I was bumping Orishas the other day and I thought that I didn't know if most of visitors know about them, since they're pretty popular here, but I rarely read anything about them.

Orishas is a hip-hop group whose members had emigrated from Cuba. Their music describes social problems on the peripheries of Havana.
The group is very popular in Europe and Latin America. Yotuel and Ruzzo, two Cubans who moved from Havana to Paris as part of an international studies program, joined Roldan and Flaco-Pro to form the band in 1999. Their work is influenced by the hip-hop movement as well as both Latin and Cuban rhythms.

I'm a big fan of artists who mix their country's musical styles with Hip-Hop, and just like Marcelo D2 has done it Samba, Orishas have done it with Cuban music.

Y Society (2007) Travel At Your Own Pace

Some people with a really good taste in Hip-Hop recommended me this album, and as soon as I started listening, I was amazed. Group members Insight and Damu the Fudgemunk created a masterpiece. It just feels like it was made in 1994: amazing jazzy beats with awsome scratches and nostalogic samples, something that would remind you of old Pete Rock, Primo or Diamond D, aswell as an unique new style from Damu. The Boston, MA resident MC Insight has gained the respect of his peers including Mr. Lif, Edan, and Electric Company over the last decade. And he can really spit good lyrics with an amazing fast (or slow at times) flow.

I really really think you should listen to this, and post your thoughts.

I've been waiting for this album forever, and when it finally leaks, I have to spend all night studying... life's a bitch. Enjoy the album, I will listen to it tomorrow, even thought I'm not expecting another classic like the ones he dropped with Primo, I sure expect some good tracks.

EDIT: After listening to the album, it's safe to say it's a little better than what I was expecting, the production is not anything near Primo, but it's decent (and sometimes actually good), I think the 2 beats handled by Jeru are standouts and the Showcase produced track "NY" features a modern rap beat in which Jeru's flow kinda fits, the lyrics are on point as usual, Jeru fans will like to hear another story of his fight against ignorance on "The Prophet", I bolded my favorite tracks. Thanks for keeping making good music for your fans Jeru.

First of all, a small intro on Percee P:

PERCEE P came up in the Patterson Houses Projects of the Bronx, NY. He started hearing the precursors of hip-hop out of his windows before he was in kindergarten, around 1973. By ten, Percee had a mic in his hand.

"Percee P is one of the most important rappers to never get his due. His style has been cited as a major influence on the likes of Pharoahe Monch (that's him on the 'Lung Collapsing Lyrics' intro) and basically all of DITC (via Lord Finesse, who he battled in '89). He's cut records with everyone from Kane & Kool Keith to Aesop Rock & Jurassic 5 and outshined just about all of them. That's his voice on DJ Shadow's 'Napalm Brain, Scatter Brain'. I could go on... In short, aside from Big Daddy Kane, he's the illest quote unquote fast rapper to ever touch the mic. After all these years in the background, Percee FINALLY releases his debut, and what label would be better for that than Stones Throw Records?
This is also another personal favourite album of mine that dropped in these last weeks, Percee P's flow is legendary (even thought I've heard some complains about he doesn't adjust it to the beats throught the album), his lyrics put a lot of good rappers in shame, and the Madlib production is great as always. A must.

We all know who DJ Muggs is: the producer behind Cypress Hill, who as delivered a few solo albums with cool guestspots, has done some trip-hop with some well-known names and his most recent album with GZA was amazing. I think everyone will agree with me when I say Muggs is a great producer and one of the most underrated around.
Now, I know some of you will be asking "Who the hell is this Sick Jacken guy!?", well, remember The Psycho Realm? He was on it. I don't have many info about this guy, but every recent verse I've heard from him was good, and I loved the song he was on from Evidence's The Weatherman LP. The album also features the participation of Cynic from Street Platoon. Don't expect some typical Cypress Hill weed songs, but some deep and political subjects, like Vatican corruption on "God's Banker", and some revolutionary war reports on "2021".

Just check their myspace to hear their single, I really liked this album.

With the goal to post something different, here are two great Rap albums from Brazil.

The first one is from a vet in the Brazilian rap scene, and instead of posting one of his many great albums, I decided to post his "Best of" for the people who haven't heard of him. Even if you don't understand Portuguese I still think you're going to enjoy it, and even recognise some samples that were also used on famous US rap classics.

I already posted an album from Marcelo D2 a while back but this one is different, since his style has changed a lot since '98, expect some great beats featuring a fusion of Samba and Hip-Hop (Marcelo's speciality, which has improved a lot through the years) and even a guestspot by two Jurassic 5 members. I hope you like these albums and hopefuly they'll become a soundtrack for this final part of the summer.

"Introduction: 17 years ago a small recording studio, TOP SHELF, located in the basement of a brownstone in the East Village section of New York, was looted during the Thompkins Square riots of 1988, displacing the recordings of many soon-to-be Hip Hop stars. The studio had been the meeting place for many rappers, neighborhood kids, and producers that would later be responsible for the greatest period of the Hip Hop age, "The Golden Era." A search commenced soon after the recordings were lost, but nothing was ever found. So sought after were the tapes, they soon acheived Holy Grail status amongst Hip Hop circles. Despite years of searching, and dozens of hopeless crusades, the tapes remained lost. No one was quite sure who took them or where they were... until now.

After an extensive investigation and search that lasted two years, the recordings have finally been recovered by Fab 5 Freddy and myself (Benjy Grinberg). They were found dozenss of miles from the site of TOP SHELF in an abandoned strage faciilty in North Jersey. ...We sought after the lost recordings of TOP SHELF because they were rumored to be among the hottest songs from that era, and we thought it was a tragedy that the world never got to hear them. It turns out that these two-inch tapes are truly a treasure chest--a time capsule of the energy and excitement of 1988 Hip Hop."

I know a lot of people already have this, but since I was sort of ideias AND time (summertime baby!), I'll post this classic.In 2002, Tonedeff, Substantial, PackFM, and Session form Extended F@mm, which released the album Happy Fuck You Songs. The group described the album as an exercise in "conceptual posse cuts" with songs ranging from the Tetris-themed "Line Drop" to bad cellphone connections in "Celly" (Amazing and funny song in my opinion). This album laid the foundation for the innovative spirit and comedic overtones normally associated with early QN5 Music releases.

Another highlight of the album is "Velocity", where Tonedeff show his fast-rapping skills, check out the live version bellow, you'll be impressed.

Paint It Blacker is a limited edition bootleg album from UK rapper Plan B. The mixtape was produced by Sem, Beni G, J33, Analog Kid and Plan B himself. It was distributed during the January-February 2007 tour.

The mixtape samples other, mostly rock, musicians' music to which Plan B raps over with his own lyrics, it's a pretty interesting album.

In case you've been living under a rock, you should know about Immortal Technique. If you don't here's some info from wikipedia: Most of his lyrics focus on socio-political issues. The views expressed in his lyrics are largely a mixture of left-wing political commentary on issues such as poverty, religion, and racism. It's the lastest track of his Poet Laureate series and it's one of the craziest things I've ever heard: You got 5 different vocal versions of the 11-minute song, all with completly different lyrics, but if you switch the vocals at any point of the song they will always rhyme. How cool is that?

I wonder how will Canibus put a 55 minutes song on his album.

Yesterday I went to a store and I found this rare album that I would never expect to find in Portugal, because only 20,000 copies were shipped before it was shelved, I had the album on my computer since it was released but that's something you don't see in a store everyday, so I bought it.

Then I thought "How haven't I posted this yet on my blog?", because it's a great album, full of dope beats produced by Soul Supreme, DJ Static Selektah, Locsmif & Vanguard, and the usual dope rhymes O.C. delivers. It's a lot better than his previous LP's Bon Appetit and Smoke and Mirrors. Check the review.
